Checking out Technorati

Blogging, as it seems, has it’s own world associated with it. I found a website called Technorati, where bloggers can find out who’s linking to their blogs and just how popular they are. Are any of you checking out this service regularly? What other blogging sites or services do you love to use?

Here’s my claim for my blog: My Technorati Profile

Toy Time Exhibit a Hit for Teaching About Old Folk Toys

Ok, so I’ve been trying to get around to taking the kids to go and see the Toy Time exhibit at the Charlotte Museum of History (http://www.charlottemuseum.org) for umm… about two months now and we finally made it over there today. First thing in their favor? All kids under 6 years old get in free. Yay! I get to save my money for the gift shop! Both kids got in free and I just happen to have a free admission ticket that a friend of mine gave me (thanks Kris!). For those of you adults without a free ticket it will cost you $6 to get in.

We walked around and looked at all 3 exhibits on the first floor and saved the toy exhibit for last. They have an old homeplace exhibit, a coal mine type exhibit, a Charlotte neighborhood exhibit, and they even have a mock up of an old bank in there. Use the elevator to get to the second floor (it’s beside the gift shop).

The toy time exhibit is upstairs and was quite entertaining. They have life size models of all of the really old favorites that you may (and may not) rememeber. Climbing cousins, ramp walkers (my 2 year old LOVED these), balane riders, spinning tops, ball ramps, the dancing lumberjack, and even a large jacob’s ladder. We spent most of our time going through this part of the museum and the kids had a blast. My son, 5 tears old, and my 2 year old both enjoyed it. That’s not an easy task considering thet they are quite different levels developmentally!

I give it two thumbs up!

Note: Pack your lunch or plan to eat out, they do not have any kind of food service there. Parking is free, easy, and close to the door. Hezekiah homesite tours are at 1:15pm and 3:15 pm so plan accordingly. You have to signup at the front desk for these, as space is limited to 20 people. And lastly save money for the gift shop. I bought my son a $5 pop-gun and a $5 sling shot along with a very small handmade basket for baby girl ($9) and a rock candy sucker for both children (less than $1 each). Well priced purchases that are hard to find anywhere in town.

P.S.

Pioneer Folk Toys makes a good bit of the toys that are sold in the gift shop. It is owned and run by my great uncle. He’s been making these old toys as long as I’ve been alove! I still have many of the ones from my childhood. Town Hardware out of Black Mountain sells a good bit of their toys online here –> http://www.townhardware.com/?BISKIT=7584971&CONTEXT=cat&cat=4
